Review:  Dead Pony – Eat My Dust!

Cover for EP Eat My Dust! by Dead Pony

Dead Pony - Eat My Dust! (Dead Pony)

Dead Pony quietly released a new EP on May 15th. Nothing about Eat My Dust! is quiet.

Filled with snarling riffs, explosive rhythm, and enough swagger to shake loose your speakers, this is an EP built for high volume.

From Crystal to Dead Pony

Formerly known as Crystal, Glasgow’s Dead Pony spent years refining their sound before emerging as one of the UK alternative scene’s most aggressive young bands. The switch to the Dead Pony name in 2020 reflected a broader transformation: louder riffs, sharper hooks, and a far more confrontational edge.

They’ve gone through lineup changes over the years, but vocalist/guitarist Anna Shields and guitarist Blair Crichton have remained the band’s creative core.

They’ve been joined by Liam Adams on bass since 2019 and Euan Lyons on drums since 2021.

Eat My Dust! Never Lets Up

Fans of nu metal will not be disappointed with Eat My Dust!  The EP opens with a question: “What If?” There’s dreamlike keyboards and Anna’s isolated vocals asking, “What if I’m still not good enough?”

The introspection doesn’t last long. Halfway through the 1:58 opener, the beat drops and Anna Shields stops asking the question gently. She screams it instead.

They don’t slow down for the rest of the EP.

“Eat My Dust!” is worthy of title track status. Relentless riffs and swaggering attitude take over completely. There’s no doubt who’s in charge with lyrics like “Let me show you how we run this town.” This is what headbanging is for.

Freak Like Me

“Freak Like Me” premiered as a single in April and is one of the standout tracks on the EP. Shields delivers one of her strongest performances.

The way Shields shifts from smooth pop hooks into grit-filled nu metal screams without losing control of the melody is a serious vocal feat. You’ll want “Freak Like Me” in your playlist.

Eat My Dust! Revives Nu Metal Without Feeling Retro

“Fury,” “Boom!” and “Lost Inside of Me” close out the EP without sacrificing any of its momentum. At no point does Eat My Dust! lose its intensity. If anything, it becomes more confident as it goes.

By the time “Lost Inside of Me” ends, the biggest disappointment is realizing the EP is already over.

Eat My Dust! carries early-2000s DNA — but Dead Pony isn’t imitating that era, they’re building on it.

With nu metal and aggressive alternative rock continuing to surge in popularity again, Dead Pony feels perfectly positioned for the moment. If Eat My Dust! is any indication, they may not stay underground much longer.

Eat My Dust! can be found on all streaming platforms.
